Protect Your People: A Conversation about Participatory Defense

November 1, 2019 @ 11:00 am - 3:00 pm

Join us for a half-day symposium on Participatory Defense, a powerful community-organizing model that supports individuals, families, and communities in impacting the outcome of court cases and transforming the landscape of power in the criminal justice system more broadly. The symposium will convene local and national lawyers, law students, activists, and people impacted first-hand by incarceration to explore how participatory defense works on the ground, the future of the movement, and how it can be embraced by new communities–including communities of lawyers–across the country. Special Guests include Raj Jayadev of Silicon Valley De-Bug, Brendon Woods, Alameda County Public Defender, Sajid Khan, Deputy Public Defender, Santa Clara Public Defender’s Office, and Isis Misdary, Assistant Defender, Defender Association of Philadelphia.

Co-sponsors include Criminal Defense Society, Berkeley Journal of Criminal Law, Post-Conviction Advocacy Project, Community Restorative Justice, Youth Advocacy Project, Prisoner Advocacy Project, Foster Education Project, Reentry Advocacy Project, Contra Costa Reentry Project and Law Students of African Descent.
